Doing what you’re told? Not these women! They defy traditional role models and successfully assert themselves in a male domain: Whether Zheng Yisao (1775-1844), who commanded a pirate fleet with over 200 ships in China and negotiated numerous contracts with rulers, or Carola Rackete, who saved 53 lives.
They are all united by the sea, resistance and breaking with conventions. This story is about them and their sisters of the sea, whose lives represent a personal declaration of independence. They oppose prejudices, norms and restrictive life situations. They are role models and instill strength—a quality that women have often been denied in the past. And they are proof that the myth of the defeated woman is no longer tenable:
»Pirates, the sea belongs to us!«
